Tarquinius the Proud
Tarquinius the Proud was a tyrant. Dione Cassio wrote that he ordered the
crucifiction of citizens in the Forum, and forced freemen into servile work,
so that he soon incurred everybody's hatred.
According to a legend his son Sextus Tarquinius outraged a noble Roman matron,
Lucrezia, the wife of the patrician Collatino.
This event followed by the suicide of Lucrezia who could not survive such an
offence, was the cause of a popular uprising led by Collatino and his friend Giunio
Bruto. The people revolted against the Tarquini, who were thrown out of the town
(509 b.C.).
Tarquinius the Proud was the last king of Rome.
